Divorce can be a drawn out and emotionally painful experience. As such, imagining a relationship with your ex-partner afterwards is often a stretch. Nonetheless it is very important, even more so if you share children with them.
Here are a few tips that might help you get some closure and allow you to maintain a working relationship with your ex.
Think of the children!
If you had children together, you must remember that those children invariably still love and treasure that person, irrespective of your feelings. If you consistently talk badly of that person to or in front of your children, it damages your children, not your former partner.
Forget revenge, a calm and considered approach is best.
It’s not all about the money
Place your children’s best interests first, even if that means not pursuing every last cent of any settlement. Long term, a working relationship with your ex so far as any children is concerned can be far more valuable than some extra dollars now. It can even save you money in the long term, by avoiding further conflict and potential legal fees.
Don’t push down your emotions
It’s okay to grieve, feel sad or even mad – these emotions are all perfectly natural. As such, you need to let them out and address them.
Don’t dwell on your divorce or revenge against your ex – if necessary seek counselling to help you work through the divorce. Remember that was one chapter of your life, but there is a brand new one waiting to be written!
